Fundamental DTLA – Downtown LA – 5/12/18

Burger crew meeting called to order on Saturday, May 12, 2018 at noon.

Members in attendance: Angela d., Trevor Y., Dennis, K., Wayne T., and Innie C.

Guests: Adrian J., Lulu T., and Davis N.

I. Ordering
Only one burger on the menu so we all ordered one! It’s the Burger ($12) – caramelized onions, American cheese, thousand island, pickle. Of course, DK added jalapenos to his (so fancy).

Trev and I also ordered the furikake sesame tots ($5) and this s’more pastry at the end of the meal.

Wayne also ordered the house smoked brisket hash ($13).

II. The burgers
The burgers looked like they were trying to copy the look of an Umami burger (similar bun, black mark on top). The burger was very simple, which made me excited since I love simple burgers that let the meat speak for itself. However, the execution was just not there. It is a double patty so you’d think there would be big meat flavor, but there wasn’t. There was also no sear to speak of on the patties. It was a very fine grind so it was a really soft burger. I tend to like more bite in my burger. The buns were good; a little sweet, and held up nicely to the burger. In tersm of toppings, there were too many onions, their thousand island looked like there were mustard seeds in it, and the pickles were very good. DK enjoyed his jalapenos.

III. The Fries/Sides
The tots were very good. Nicely fried and seasoned. However, they totally jip you on the furikake. If they had just said they were tots, I would have been very happy with this order, but they promised me furikake and just didn’t deliver.

The s’more pastry was amazing! In fact, all their pastries looked incredible. I was very tempted by the espresso cream cheese cinnamon roll! Maybe next time.

IV. Miscellaneous
When we went there was scaffolding covering the building so it was a little difficult to find. It is in downtown LA, which means parking sucks. Most lots are $7 flat rate on Saturday and meters are a whopping $4 an hour. It was very small inside, but had a cool vibe. They had a full bar and Stumptown coffee (my fave).

V. Value
I ask the members how much they would pay for the burger they ate. We would pay anywhere between $7.50 to $11 for these burgers, which means they’re a little more expensive than we would expect to pay.

VI. The verdict
Had potential, but ultimately disappointed. The ratings: 2.3, 2.7, 2.9, 2.9, and 3.0.

Next burger crew meeting: June 30th at noon (Angela’s choice). Location: TBD (probably somewhere in Lakewood since our little slider is due June 5th).
